Carl Grapentine

Announcer

 

Carl Grapentine is now in his 38th season as "The Voice of the Michigan Band." An alumnus of the University of Michigan School of Music, he played oboe in the Symphony Band and Symphony Orchestra, and was baritone soloist with the Men's Glee Club during his student years. Much in demand as a vocal soloist and narrator, Carl has sung the National Anthem at Tiger Stadium, Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, the Pontiac Silverdome and Crisler Arena. He is now the morning host of WFMT radio in Chicago, the country's leading classical music station. He resides in Oak Park, Illinois with his wife Liz and their two children Jonathan and Anne.

 

John Stout

Music Arranger

 

John Stout is now in his 30th year as one of the arrangers for the Michigan Marching Band. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Music, John holds Bachelor and Master degrees in composition and conducting. John's arrangements and original compositions have been published by companies such as Hal Leonard, Manhattan Beach, Boosey and Hawkes, and Columbia Pictures. John has been the recipient of several commissions and grants, including a commission from the Boston Pops Orchestra. John resides in Ann Arbor.

 

Jamie L. Nix

Music Arranger

 

Jamie Nix is the former Director of the Michigan Marching Band. Jamie received his Master of Conducting and Trombone Performance from the University of Michigan. Jamie is currently attending the University of Miami to obtain his doctorate degree in Conducting.

 

Dick Gaskill

Photographer

 

Dick Gaskill returns for his 47th year as a photographer for the Michigan Marching Band. Recently, Dick began to record and document his collection of over 47,000 band photographs. Dick resides in Livonia with his wife Peg.

 

Linda Bickel

Photographer/Graphic Designer

 

A former member of the Michigan Marching Band trumpet section, Linda returns for her 14th year as Band Photographer and Graphic Designer. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, Linda resides and freelances in the Grass Lake/Ann Arbor area.

 

Belinda Carter

Photographer

 

Belinda has been covering the MMB since the 1999 season and has released eight CD's of photos of the Band. In addition she has edited the MMB digital photos webpage offeing updated photos of MMB

 

Robert Brown

Videographer/Photographer

 

Robert has provided photo and video assistance to the MMB since 1975. He has been instrumental in helping expand the use of video and digital audio for MMB performance documentation.

 

Jeff Wohl

Video Coordinator

 

Jeff Wohl returns for his 19th year as Video Coordinator of the Michigan Marching Band. Jeff was a member of the Band's alto saxophone section from 1981 - 85. Jeff resides in Canton.

 

Dr. John P. Schmidt

Staff Physician

 

John Schmidt, MD, originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Schmidt marched in the trombone section for four years while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science and Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Health System and is currently working on faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan. His professional interests include Wilderness Medicine and Sports Medicine.

 

Dr. Cemal Sozener

Staff Physician

 

Cemal Sozener, MD is a fourth-year resident in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan Health System. Cemal was a member of the Euphonium section and also served on the MMB graduate staff. While attending the University of Michigan he earned a B.S. degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, a Masters in Nuclear Engineering and a Doctor of Medicine degree.
