Scott Bersaglia is Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Michigan where he teaches undergraduate conducting, serves as Conductor of the Campus and University Bands, Assistant Director of the Michigan Marching Band, Director of the Michigan Hockey Band, and faculty advisor for the Epsilon chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In addition to his duties at the University of Michigan, Dr. Bersaglia is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Sacred Winds Ensemble. Since 2000, the group has commissioned fourteen works for wind, string, and choral ensembles. Most recently, the ensemble accepted an invitation to perform in New Orleans, LA at the 2008 Southern Baptist Music Conference National Convention.
Professor Bersaglia earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied conducting and musicology under the auspices of Jerry Junkin and K.M. Knittel, respectively. While in Austin, he also served as the orchestra director of Hyde Park Baptist Church. Prior to his appointment at UT, Dr. Bersaglia was Director of Bands at South Laurel High School in London, KY. Under his leadership, all ensembles received top honors at regional and state levels. Additionally, he initiated the school's first commissioning project, chamber players program, and Conducting Symposium Series.
Dr. Bersaglia holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Morehead State University. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the Conductors Guild, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, and Gamma Beta Phi. He also holds honorary memberships in Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi. Dr. Bersaglia is a regular contributor to GIA’s Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. This December, he will present a clinic for beginning music educators at the 2007 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.
