Giovani Briguente

306 Born in Tatuí, State of São Paulo - Brazil, Giovani Briguente started his musical studies when he was 11-years old at Conservatório de Tatuí, the largest music school in Latin America. In 2010, he earned the Flute Performance Degree from Tatuí and a History Major Degree from Universidade de Sorocaba. While teaching World History, Brazilian History and Art History at Mackenzie Elementary and High School, Giovani studied 3 more years at Conservatório de Tatuí and Technical School of Arts of State of São Paulo, earning degrees in Conducting and Flute respectively. In 2013, Giovani was accepted as faculty member of the Conservatório de Tatuí, where he taught Music Theory, Music History and conducted the Student Symphonic Band and the Youth String Orchestra for two years. He created and directed the semi-professional string ensemble, Camerata Corelli. His tutor, Maestro Dario Sotelo, was the co-founder and artistic director. During this period, Giovani was professionally playing the flute and the piccolo in the Symphonic Band of the Conservatório de Tatuí under the baton of Maestro Sotelo.

Still in Brazil, Giovani began his career as a composer. He earned second prize in the National Band Composition Contest with his piece “Revolução Francesa” (“French Revolution”), grade-6 category.

Giovani earned the Master degree in Wind Conducting at University of Minnesota Duluth under the tutelage of Dr. Mark Whitlock. Giovani worked at UMD as a Teaching Assistant and his duties included teaching conducting classes, directing the UMD Pep Band and assisting with the UMD Marching Band. During his second year at UMD, he shared the direction of the UMD Concert Band, with Dr. Whitlock. Giovani was principal of the flute section in the UMD Symphonic Wind Ensemble and head of the second flute and piccolo in the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, both under the direction of Dr. Mark Whitlock.

Giovani has been invited as guest conductor by the Symphonic Band of Conservatório de Tatuí, the UMD Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Twin Ports Wind Orchestra and Honor Festival Bands, as well as Summer Camps.

Giovani Briguente is now pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Professor Michael Haithcock.
